Mission: Transforming literacy one creation at a time.

Vanessa Fortenberry, the owner of Power of Words: Connecting Readers and Writers, LLC, is a retired educator. Throughout her 27 years of service, she taught music, reading, and media (teacher-librarian). During her first 9 years as a music teacher it was not unusual for her to march her students to the library to research creative music projects. So, it was only a matter of time, before she entered a school as a first-time teacher-librarian.

A lifelong advocate of literacy, many years ago, Vanessa fell in love with the written word and her writing endeavors soon followed. Every morning her fingers itched to feel the keys on her typewriter. Yes that’s right, typewriter! Computers were not a part of her world at the time. Now, you can find Vanessa at her laptop clicking away! In addition, Vanessa reads something (books, magazines, online research, etc.) every day and/or night.

Vanessa created her business, which is two-fold; serving students and adults. Her vision includes providing a variety of literacy services that enrich, educate, and empower her clients. Her passion overflows so much, that she desires the same for her clients and she aspires to assist others in solving their literacy concerns.

As a teacher-librarian, Vanessa often witnessed a disengagement between reading and writing amongst her students. Therefore, Vanessa’s ultimate goal involves creating a bridge to connect both, reading and writing. The quote, “Good writers are good readers,” credited to author, James Scott Bell; still hold true today. Somewhere along the way, Vanessa added her own twist: “Good Writers are Good Readers and Good Readers are Good Writers.”

Vanessa enjoys bringing literature to life through her author talks. In addition, she developed workshops for students (K-5) that reinforces classroom instruction. The benefits to students:

  • Encourage them to read
  • Motivate them to write
  • Inspire their creativity and confidence
  • Empower them to follow their dreams

Did you know that “Children who had an author visit to their school reported higher levels of reading enjoyment (68.2% vs 47.2%) and writing enjoyment (43.9% vs 32.4%) than their peers who didn’t receive a visit?”

As an author, continuous learning is essential. Personal development and a growth mindset should be the objective of anyone, no matter their career. In addition, Vanessa encountered some experiences early on, during her journey, whereby she would have taken a different path had she known then, what she knows now. Of course, that’s a part of the adventure. Nevertheless, her goal for aspiring and newbie creators is to allow them to partially stroll in her wore shoes. Ultimately, everyone will indeed walk in their own power throughout their writing career.

Many aspiring creators and newbie authors seek Vanessa’s advice on their story ideas and how to get started in the business. Therefore, Vanessa yearns to offer courses for aspiring authors (coming soon). She’s not interested in teaching courses on “How to write or editing services.” Rather her courses will include beneficial information to ignite inspiration contributing to a life-enhancing experience for writers in launching and accelerating their creative dream.

Banned Books

Throughout the United States, book banning has affected school classrooms and libraries, denying young people access to books that expand their awareness and knowledge of the world around them.

Power of Words: Connecting Readers and Writers, LLC supports authors and illustrators, educators and librarians in an effort to protect the freedom and privilege to read, one of the most vital foundations of a free society.
